The big picture: Investing in Innovation during economic downturns
As manufacturers are aware, the cost of doing business is increasing. Volatile market conditions have created a squeeze on companies that are stuck between the rock of increasing raw materials prices and the hard place of customers who are not ready to shoulder new costs. Along with the cost squeeze is the issue of excess production capacity. Canadian manufacturers have headroom to produce more and while there has been recovery over the last two years, production levels are still at a similar level to five years ago.

Global Robot Installations at an all time high says "International Federation of Robots"
Industrial robot installations worldwide have reached an all-time high in 2021, according to the World Robotics report 2022. Put together by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), the report finds that 517,385 new industrial robots were installed last year.
This indicates a 31 percent year-on-year growth rate and exceeds the pre-pandemic record of robot installation in 2018 by 22 percent. The stock of operational robots around the globe hits a new record of about 3.5 million units, says IFR.

Learning 4.0: Supporting SMEs and inspiring the future workforce with industrial 3D printers
All across Canada, on-campus applied research and innovation centres are supporting inventive start-ups, small to medium-sized businesses and faculty and students by providing access to leading technology and expertise.
The centres are a vital part of an ecosystem that inspires Canadian innovation, smarter product design and quick commercialization of creative ideas. In addition, skill development for post-secondary instructors and students helps tackle a shortage of technically skilled talent. Student projects and job placements equip graduates to confidently use the technology they will encounter in manufacturing workplaces.

2022 Fall Economic Statement
The federal Liberals unveiled their fall update Thursday – a 92-page mini-budget setting out Canada’s fiscal situation and outlining new policies to tackle cost-of-living woes.
The word “inflation” appears more than 100 times in the document, making clear the government’s primary economic concern.
But beyond the top-line debt projections and the analysis of how Canada seeks to soften the impact of a potential recession, the fiscal update offers key details that shed light on Liberal priorities.
